Four Ways To Get Your Confidence Back After Baby

Photo by Daria Shevtsova from Pexels

You know all the usual jokes. It’s the job you get with no interview, and no instruction manual. Parenthood is a roller coaster of emotions and for many new mums, when you finally surface from the all-consuming world of having a newborn, it’s not uncommon to wonder who you actually are anymore. Having a new baby is such an intense situation- and with a little being making such big demands on your body, your mind and your soul, losing your sense of self and confidence is something that many go through. So how do you begin to get it back? It won’t happen overnight but these tips may help you start to rediscover who you are when you’re not being Mummy…

Get Some At-Home Treatments

While dashing off to the salon simply isn’t practical with a newborn baby, you can use the chance to stock up on some at-home pampering. You may not get much time to yourself, but when you do, instead of crashing out in front of some mindless TV, you can carry out little acts of self-care to make yourself feel better. Even something as simple as a bath with a face mask or painting your toenails can make give you a little lift- caring for yourself in simple ways can bring you back to you. There are some great pampering tips here.

Listen to Your Body

Your body has done amazing things bringing a new life into the world, so don’t be ashamed to listen to what it’s trying to tell you and act in it. Don’t let being busy become a reason to stop tuning in. It’s a bad idea to ignore that nagging back pain - book into to see a chiropractor before it develops into something worse. And if you have persistent pelvic pains after baby? These can point to many things, so look at a good source of information such as patient.info to find out more.

Treat Yourself to some New Underwear

It may be a small thing but it’s the foundation of looking good and feeling confident. If your underwear drawer is a mess of fraying elastic and saggy maternity bras, why not treat yourself to a few sets of colourful, cute matching underwear? It’s a small way to reclaim your body and rediscover your flirtier side. Even just investing in some great quality shapewear can make you feel more confident in your clothes while there are extra lumps and bumps. There are lots of options on the market now- the guide at thelingerieaddict.com is a great place to start.

Get Out and Walk Every Day

In the new baby haze, which I like to call a babymoon, also commonly now fondly known as the fourth trimester, days can drift by without you leaving the house. So make it your personal mission to get out into the sunshine and walk at least once a day. Walking has so many physical, spiritual (great for the aura) and mental benefits, and some much-needed fresh air keeps problems in perspective and eases you gently back into physical fitness. It can also be an incredible bonding experience with your baby. Find out more about the benefits of walking in this article. Getting out is of course a great way of meeting people, especially new mums in the exact same position as you.

Underfall Boatyard and #TravleMassiveBristol My Night Out with Baby

Last night it was an absolute delight and a pleasure to attend my first ever #TravelMassiveBristol event and it did not disappoint. It was at the Underfall Yard in the new Vistor Centre.
When hubby and Aaron dropped me and Lottie off I never dreamed that as I walked away from the road I'd end up on such a picturesque corner of the harbour. I felt like I'd gone abroad for the evening. How appropriate to feel like that at a *travel* event!
Shortly after the above picture was taken we felt a few spots of rain so headed inside. The rain actually held off though, so that's two days in a row we've escaped the storm that London got and just had the humid heat alone that normally precedes it. So warm in fact that we stayed in the harbour till very late. Staggering back to a hotel room instead of making the journey home would be amazing.
I rushed to the networking event without having dinner, so I was delighted with the cafe within. It's called PICKLE (which was so cute as it is what we called lil lady baby bump until the 20 week scan - except it was the 25th week scan as that one was inconclusive). I actually had one of each of the savoury items you see below. So bursting with flavour I practically inhaled them!
Travel Massive, the Bristol chapter, has been set up by Heather Cowper and Jane Batt and they are both superb professional travel bloggers/vloggers, Jane at Practically Perfect Mums and Heather Cowper at Heather on her Travels. It's a case of watch this space as I think they are going to do great things, both personally and under the Travel Massive banner taking us all along for the ride. I love Heather's recent cruise video. Jane is quickly establishing herself as a travel blogger and vlogger. Having been a parent blogger, she's transitioning very well into family travel, with video her area of expertise as that was her profession pre-kids. kids being her 3 beautiful boys who often feature in her videos. When booking accommodation, you'll certainly get an honest appraisal of it if you first of all view Jane's video vlogs.

I went to the event with the intention of mingling with the travel industry and getting a night out. In reality, due to breastfeeding, I brought the baby with me. I knew I could get her to sleep and that I did, but it meant planting myself in a corner until she was sufficiently cuddled and fed, to be tucked up in her buggy for the evening. The wonderful Nicola (Project Director of Underfall Yard) set me up with a glass of cucumber water and I was right next to a bowl of kettle chips so I was sorted. Once she was in a deep sleep I purchased a basket of food from Pickle and ravenously tucked in, savouring every delicious bite, knowing it was good for me and baby. Fresh flavours that needed no seasoning.

I absolutely LOVED the venue for the evening. As above, the view and ambience was spectacular, but the inside is amazing too due to the history and importance of the power house and pump room.

If you visit the Underfall Boatyard you get to see
  • The Pump Room - 3 electric pumping engines that powered Bristol's hydraulic network for over 100 years. They still operate regularly for visitors.
  • The Accumulators - these huge weights are raised by pumps and descend to push water through the pipes at high pressure. You can see the accumulator in action when the pumps are operated.
  • The Patent Slip - Built in the 1890s the slip is used for hauling boats out of the water.
  • The Big Shed - used by maritime businesses. Not open to the public.
  • The Workshops - still in use by the Docks Engineer's Team.
  • The Sluice Room - the water level in the harbour is maintained from here. Also used to help clear silt (mud) from the harbour.

I haven't had a good old catch up with Gemma from Hello it's Gemma in YEARS, so I spent 80% of the evening chatting with her. This coincided with me eating my three food bits from Pickle, so sorry for all of my chomping Gemma, but breastfeeding don't half give me a very healthy appetite!
I spy us (and my buggy) here:

But as animated as our conversation was she was slightly distracted as she'd dropped her lens cap. I said if I could find my Mum's contact lens when I was little we will find it. Luckily she did! I was quick to catch her joy on camera :-) A picture that also highlights the rustic and authentic charm of the venue. It's not a place that will be booking decorators anytime soon. You feel like you've stepped into a real life piece of history the minute you enter.
One of the things Gemma is REALLY passionate about is the street art in Bristol. She's also extremely knowledgeable on the topic and has made me want to get out and track down all the art. Really looking forward to visiting North Street now! She also told me about Upfest, which I'd previously never heard of and it sounds AMAZING! Luckily the lady from Bristol Street Art Tours was at our networking event last night, so we chatted with her. 100% I will now attend one of their tours! They're at Where The Wall.com
I was absolutely fascinated to hear how the street art gets painted over. What a fab way of keeping the art alive, fresh, colourful and current. No wonder the Bristol Street Art Tours has "inspirational fun all Summer long" as their tag line. Also means up and coming artists can get a look in. They assured me that the art gets documented and curated before it's lost forever. I can see me becoming a bit of an addict now. I already always take a pic of street art whenever we are lucky enough to encounter any on our travels.

I always love to catch up with Jane and it's been far far too long. I was gutted to miss the first Travel Massive Bristol event so made sure I attended this one.
I am so pleased that Jane and Heather have set up a Travel Massive in Bristol and I can see them doing great things. I got a lil insight into what they have in mind as I joined them at the pub while waiting to cadge a lift home with Jane:
So tranquil was the setting and it was such a balmy warm night, it was after eleven o'clock when us three girls said goodbye to the harbour. I said more of a "see you again" than a "goodbye" as I will definitely return. You can see the Underfall Yard in the distance, our view as we called it a night. I most certainly felt as if I had been on holiday even if it was only for a few wee hours.
Bristol certainly deserves its place as one of the best cities in the UK.

Find out more about Underfall Boatyard here.

If you are a member of the travel industry and would like to work together you can email me here. Thank you.

I have edited my footage from last night and got it live on You Tube at last:

My New Mum Summary of the Last Ten Weeks with Baby

I haven't blogged nearly enough since my new baby arrived. Lots of things now, I can't blog about, as they're forgotten. I don't think I can blog authentically about the sleepless nights of the first 7 days as the rawness and teariness that would make the post meaningful, poignant and heartfelt has long since gone - Mother Nature is great like that. That's why, blogging as you go along is the ideal way, but I just didn't have the time or the inclination in those early weeks which is a shame as I know I would like ro read back over them. I would like my little girl to have records to look back over, for when she has her own babies and wants to compare their birth to hers. So I have the info to hand when she asks questions. Our memories aren't as good as we think they are. Blog posts OFTEN remind me of things I have forgotten. But I pledge now, to record more. To blog more.

Starting with this post
of my
favourite photos
from the last few weeks.

Week one. At two days old. I pick this one. It was the Bounty photographer who surrounded her in her blanket like this. None of the arranging woke her. For the first few weeks my baby slept and slept and slept. So very unlike her brother.
They've been inseparable since day one, brother and sister. The bond has only strengthened since and Aaron shows no signs of getting bored. The day she was born was a Monday. The birth was at 15:39 and we then spent ages in the recovery room. By the time we got to the ward it was touch and go with regards to visitors and I'd already missed dinner. But I pre-empted it in the recovery room and got Aaron & Grandma to arrive at the ward shortly after we were settled down there. I didn't want Aaron to not only go to bed without me, but also without SEEING me! It was the first time I hadn't personally collected him from school (thank you Grandma Mwaaah) and I was desperate to see him and for him to see the baby. Moments like the below made their mad dash to the hospital for the last 30 minutes of visiting time so so worth it. Daddy took them home though *cries* so I was alone. As much as I would have loved Daddy to stay (you couldn't make it up actually, when he could with our first he wasn't allowed to and he we were in a hospital, with our second baby, where he was allowed to stay, but I wanted Aaron to have one of us home and they needed a lift back home anyway). As hard as it was to say goodbye, especially when I couldn't move from the chest down and couldn't even yet raise my knees, it was for the best as we did skin to skin all night which I feel really established breastfeeding. Actually I feel it takes 6 weeks to establish it fully but that got us off to a confident start (but more on that in another *soon to come* post as it got worse before it got better).
Her face was very large and swollen in those early days, as you can see above, but it is because for the final few weeks in utero she was upside down and engaged. If you did a headstand for over 3 weeks I am sure blood would rush to your head too LOL.

Given her perfect engaged position it's almost a shame she came out the sunroof hey! But at 10 lbs 10 oz I think it was the best laid plan and thankfully WAS a planned c-section unlike last time where I had a natural active labour for 18 hours and THEN a c-section. I would say this was more straight forward, but just like Aaron was 8 days late, the c-section was postponed from 21st January to 25th January. So even plans, like nature, can be delayed. 25th was definitely meant to be as all the anxiety I had about 21st disappeared once they postponed the appointment, literally like a cloud lifting.

I was released from hospital Wednesday 27th after having the lil lady on Monday. Wednesday we arrived home very late as getting out of hospital took ages. Thursday and Friday hubby did the school run and I rested in my PJs with my gorgeous girl.

Saturday and Sunday though, I had this "loneliness" thing. Something I also encountered after having Aaron. So when hubby tried to go to the barbers on Saturday the whole family had to go too no matter how long it took to get baby ready. So off we went. We were out for about 4 hours and baby slept in the sling the WHOLE time. Unbelievable. But if I remember rightly it was her first time in it.

Sunday hubby wanted to go to the shops to get my birthday present and same deal I was overcome with panic at the thought of being home alone. So off we all went.
Week two. This week began badly. On my birthday the husband returned to work after paternity leave. I was bereft on the Sunday night and Monday morning and it was like deja vu a hark back to being a new mum with Aaron. I did my first school run alone, on foot and finally, I discovered I had a nasty urine infection picked up from hospital. So Monday morning this week sees me visiting the midwives in floods of tears. But it was onwards and upwards from there and took 3 courses of antibiotics to get better.
Ten Days Old
And photos permitting, I will continue to add one of the two of them:
But it wasn't all bad as he was off a few days later, the same week, so we did celebrate my birthday in style after all with a fabulous family meal at the Beefeater. Baby was only 8/9 days old but she was fine and slept in the pram mostly. I wasn't confident breastfeeding outside then so she guzzled from a bottle a few times during the meal.
Week three. This week there are a few contenders for pics but I will pick these two.

As you can see the swollen face/head has long since gone and my lil lady's personality now shines through her face. Showing herself to be the girl she will become.

Week four. I just had to pick this picture as it is the first time I could really see the diva in her. It's one of my favourite pictures of all of the hundreds I have taken. It was taken on a day where I treated myself to an all day breakfast in a cafe :-)

Week five. It felt like she smiled from the very beginning oh her life thus far but it was the weekend  of week 5: 26th/27th/28th February that her smiles became BEAMS and could be done on demand in response to someone smiling at her. (My best friend, her husband and her son - Aaron's best mate - were here for the weekend that weekend and my BFF was blessed with lots of smiles from my baby girl). Actually, a couple of days before, at the Thursday breastfeeding group, I saw similar but did not capture it on camera.
Whenever we are in the kitchen Aaron follows, always taking a keen interest in whatever is going on. He will run and get anything and everything he is asked to get and ten weeks in the novelty shows NO signs of wearing off. I am thrilled with his helpful spirit and love for his sister. So far so good.
Whilst  the friends were here for the weekend, we went together to a VIP event for bloggers at Thomas Land meaning the lil lady experienced her first long car journey and she was as good as gold.

Week six. Heart melts. She only has eyes for him, as below. The above picture doesn't capture the whole scenario but I clearly do get it on camera below. She will literally look behind her if she hears his voice, turning her head left and right as he moves. She only started doing that with my voice during the Easter hols. She's done that in response to Aaron more or less since day one. I'd say the feeling is mutual judging by Aaron's interest in his Sister. Sibling love (not yet rivalry) is so so lovely. I didn't know I would be blessed with these moments so early on. I hope he still loves her when she is old enough to play with. It's difficult as I fear his playing days may be over by then, but I think he'll always make time for her. For many other reasons, the age gap HAS worked well for us.
Week seven. A lovel morning picture still in her Kissing Rabbits 2.5 tog Anorak Gro Bag from the night before.
Week eight and I finally resist the urge to dress her in a sleepsuit:
But not everyday though. Here she is at Aaron's Easter school performance (concert) snug in a Next sleepsuit and being very well behaved throughout. Fab as it meant she did not disturb the students/performers or parents/audience in the school hall and it meant that I could record/video the whole thing.
I've tried to keep up with the Milestone Cards but have missed a couple but did manage - thankfully - to do weeks 1, 4 and 8:
Week nine. Love these ones.
Of course, she had to be specially decked out for Easter so it was all about the Easter bunny in these two outfits:
Week Ten. As in, last week. She met her Godmother. We went to see Robinson Crusoe on a special private preview and as a result Charlotte from Berice Baby got this great picture of us:

Week ten, we also went to the Ideal Home Show. Baby, me and her Godmother, my niece. Thanks to seeing a tweet about it, I got complimentary tickets courtesy of British Gas. Thank you British Gas, and yes I did get a picture on your stand :-) This was the closest I got to Wilbur as it was on the way out and he'd already gone home. My niece saw your stand on the way in, but somehow I didn't. I'm a bit scattered when I arrive somewhere when travelling with a baby. As I told Charlotte at the movie screening, it takes me a while to "land" when I arrive. At Thomas Land I made the mistake of trying to say hello to people whilst still full of adrenaline - they must have thought I was wired LOL.

Lil lady slept in the sling, on the way there (as it was easier to navigate stairs on London transport without her in the pram) and continued to sleep for the first few hours that we were there. She then woke, fed and couldn't have been more happy in her buggy. I even listened to lots of Vitamix presentations without her fussing as she was just looking up at lights and listening to all the voices, utterly fascinated.  As in the photo above, below, I am using my wonderful Wuti Wrap from We Made Me. If you would like to know more, I videoed it being demonstrated at The Baby Show back in October, when I fell in love with it and then a few weeks later, after chats on Twitter they sent me one to review. I adore the breathable lightweight fabric it is made from.
So that's it really, a brief summary of the last ten weeks, which now gives me permission to write current posts from now on, in a timely manner, that can be cathartic as they'll be what is on my mind at the time rather than me scratching my head to remember the past, as recent as it may be.

New Mum. Don't Buy Her Flowers

I had an experience this year, where I decided that flowers are the worst gift idea ever. Don't get me wrong I USED to love them. Let me tell you what happened in May of this year. Interflora in their infinite wisdom sent me a text asking if I wanted to repeat an order I'd done last year. I was thrilled, as it was my Mum's 60th, I had no idea what to get her, and it was too late to get something in the post for it to arrive in time. Turned out that they didn't deliver on bank holidays, at all. So, I rung them up and explained that (a) they should have seen that the date they were offering to send for WAS a bank holiday and that (b) perhaps if they are going to send those texts they should send them 4-5 days before the event (or more) so people can plan. I got all excited and spent ages choosing the flowers, before I realised it wouldn't be possible.

I then had the great idea that I could send her a delivery from Tesco.com except that they do not deliver to the Republic of Ireland. Anyway, I rung them up, and spoke to their tech team and a really patient really lovely guy suggested that I sign up as a member of the .ie Tesco. I did, and began choosing.

My Mum LOVES cake, LOVES Bacardi and Coke, and lots of other things. As the total totted up I came up with a superb idea to spend 60 pounds for her 60th birthday.

Anyway, to cut a long story short she adored everything I sent her and as she doesn't have t'internet or computer, she's never shopped online.

A lady driver delivered the items and brought them right through to Mum's kitchen. They got chatting and as the Tesco lady could see how giddy with excitement my Mum was she asked her "is it your birthday?" to which my Mum was thrilled to hear answering "yes". The chatty lady said "more and more people are doing this now" which my Mum loved hearing, as she always likes to know what's going on in the world, and not just current affairs if you get what I mean (she's not nosey, she just likes to be aware of trends - likes and dislikes - not fashion but sometimes that too ha ha).

Anyway, my Mum must have sent me 20 texts that day, as part of a long SMS convo we had, she was so grateful and the goodies lasted way way longer than flowers would have done. My Mum got to have a drink on her birthday, and she was over the moon. Several times since then, I have often thought, flowers don't make the best present, so with that all in mind, I was very intrigued to see THIS on Twitter:

Being that my URL is New Mum, and being that I don't think flowers make the best gift, clearly I was intrigued by this tweet and wasn't disappointed when I went to the website:

They do free deliveries on orders over 50 pounds, and this is what they say:

A thoughtful alternative to flowers

Flowers are a go-to present when someone has a baby. In a survey 97% of mums told us that they received flowers after giving birth. The average number of bunches was four, some got more than ten. Ten! In all likelihood, mum will still get flowers from someone, but with Don’t Buy Her Flowers you can be the person that gives her something special.
Don't Buy Her Flowers is a site worth visiting as there's even a blog over there which makes for a really great read. Put the kettle on and read Sisterhood and all that.

I'll let you in on a secret, I didn't like the flowers that the husband bought me just after Aaron arrived, so that's the other thing with flowers, they're very very personal and you don't want to get it wrong, or spend 50-60 pounds on something that may not be fully appreciated, or that might be the 10th bouquet they've received.

I'd have much rathered one of those lovely ornaments, you know the ones:

Willow Tree Figures - Child of My Heart Willow Tree Statue

So what'd your opinion dear reader? I'd really love to know your experience. What gifts did you receive as a new mum?

Back to Don't Buy Her Flowers, if I wasn't breast feeding, after 9 months of not drinking whilst pregnant, this would be my New Mum gift of choice:

Finding my Yoga Mojo - Vlog!

Here is a video describing how I am coming back to Kundalini Yoga after a 2 year (plus) absence.

I didn't realise becoming a new mum would mean giving up something that had been a large part of my life for 9 years.

What did you give up when you became a Mum?

I hate the thumbnails that get generated when imbedding a video!

Now I am Two

Each time motherhood throws us a challenge, as a first time mum, we can be heard saying

"nobody prepared me for.....
pregnancy
childbirth
breastfeeding
teething!"
and so it continues...

But then a new day dawns - they are less reliant on you, but there's a new challenge.

Now they are TWO! 2 years' old! And a boy!

Did anyone prepare me? No!

It is a battle for your control versus their independence.

Both of these videos were recorded today.

The first is simply me wanting Aaron to eat a bowl of fruit, where he decides he only wants to drink the juice.

Yeah, being two involves them making decisions and enjoying seeing them through.

The second video is cute, in my humble opinion.

Sleeping through the night

I can't believe I have blogged twice today and forgot to say that...

... AARON SLEPT THROUGH LAST NIGHT...

for the first time in over a week...  I was so excited when I looked at the clock ant it was 9:30 a.m.

This photo is him asleep but not from last night (as I was asleep then tooooooo)...

... photo's from 5th November

Sleep deprivation can be one of the hardest things to endure as a new Mum.

Last night I did bath (Johnson's Bedtime Bath), bottle (an additional bottle) and bed... it worked!

Correction, that was the night before last when he was up THREE times... No! What worked last night was simply... the additional bottle.

So... tonight I am combining both methods... he has already had a Johnson's Bedtime Bath, and will be having 2 bottles before bed.  One norm and one additional (the latter not being the full amount, i.e. the additional one last night was only 4 oz).

The "toy" on the side of the cot is Vtech's Baby Bear Sweet Dreams and Aaron loves it.  We got it from Mothercare.
