It's All About Pumpkin Carving for The Perfect Halloween

Where oh where have pumpkins been all my life? I only carved one for the first time in four decades last year and only then because the pumpkins and all the tools/info required to carve them were provided for me.

It was our best Halloween yet, very hot at 23 degrees and I uploaded a slideshow of our amazing day out here:

Well this year, once again, my pumpkin and the carving of it came free of charge, this time via an art work shop at Aaron's school. Except this year we even got a battery operated candle* with it AND the chance to make a pumpkin mask to go with it. *Everyone is conscious of Halloween and fire risks this year, with all of the high profile information about flame retardent costumes (and the lack of them).
I'm so proud of our carved pumpkin and it looks great illuminated in the dark. Even better than our creation from last year. The reason this year's is so much better is because school provided templates. So, I taped the template to the pumpkin and cut through the paper, directly into the pumpkin, following the outline of the design I'd chosen.

When it's all singing all dancing tomorrow, I'll grab a pic to add to this post.

And.... here it is our 2015 illuminated pumpkin below. Perfect large Sainsbury's one, with two candles inside. Daddy set it up outside the front door for us, so that people would know that we're a Trick or Treating friendly house. Shortly after 17:30 (as soon as it got dark) they started arriving and they were thick and fast until the last one at about 20:22. We only had one ten minute break to sit on the sofa - apart from that our door knockers were so frequent we stayed right by the door, sometimes with it opened sometimes closed.
If you too want to carve a pumpkin and have not done so already then there are some brilliant bingo pumpkin templates to download here. Carving, using a stencil, is so much easier and you get a lovely accurate, symmetrical cut.

A leading UK bingo company commissioned  a leading artist - Sand in Your Eye - to carve that selection of bingo inspired pumpkins along with the easy-to-use Halloween themed stencils.

Pumpkin carving is the easiest way to get involved in Halloween, but we will of COURSE be trick or treating too! But, having done the inside, and the outside versions, we're opting for inside. 2013 we walked the streets door knocking for 90 minutes with Aaron's cousins. I loved it and we collected LOADS of sweets - I was AMAZED by the neighbourhood's generosity and how they got right into the spirit of things - it was surprisingly heart warming actually. 2014, last year, we opted to stay in and answer the door, gifting the trick or treats rather than gathering them (as we'd already spent the whole day celebrating Halloween at the farm, as per the video above). Being that I am nearly 28 weeks pregnant and very large, I can't face the thought of 90 minutes on my feet in the dark, so we'll be doing last year's way again. We still dress up, just that we are answering the door rather than knocking on it and it works really well. Aaron LOVES dishing out the sweets and the kids love having a warm response when they knock at the door.

We're all organised for Halloween. We have a Halloween doorbell that lights up and makes sounds, that we bought weeks ago as a special buy in Aldi. We have our carved pumpkin. We have costumes - mine from last year EVEN fits over my bump. We have a Halloween paper lantern that we made with the presenter of Art Attack AND we bought all of the sweets today - lots of them!!!! You can see our paper lantern and my costume in this blog post. Oh and we already did some Halloween baking thanks to Collective Bias.

This was us last year :-)
Halloween 2014
According to Mintel, retail sales of Halloween products in the UK are expected to reach £240m this year, a 4% growth from last year’s £230m. Whether you’re demonstrating your own artist flare or nurturing your children’s, pumpkins are one of the easiest ways to partake in the Halloween spirit.

The Hottest Halloween Like Ever - A Day To Get Out in the Great Outdoors for an Adventure

The minute I heard Halloween was to be 20 degrees HOT on Friday, I was like that is not a day to be indoors. So Carolin and I made arrangements to meet for a fun filled day out. It actually got to 21 degrees in the end, and last night on the radio I heard that places like Kew Gardens reached 23.6 on the old mercury.
A temperature of 23.6C (74.3F) was recorded in Gravesend, Kent and Kew Gardens, Greater London, surpassing the previous record of 20.0C.Other parts of the south of England and the north coasts of Wales and Norfolk also broke the 20C mark.
I started off in a cotton mix jumper, but whilst I hung washing on the line I felt very hot, so before leaving had to change into a t shirt (and I was able to remain that way all day even in the shade). I left Aaron in a long sleeved t shirt and he was fine.

On arrival at the farm, all he wanted to do was feed the ducks (for 20 minutes) so half my crusty french stick was gone, just like that.

It tickled me (and my followers on Instagram) when his duck feeding was interrupted to exclaim...

"It's a Gruffalo!" at the top of his voice:
He soon had company feeding the ducks:
And after that, that's when the adventures began. They led the way, and Carolin and I followed. They really got off the beaten track our adventurous pair, and we ended up in what appeared to be a kindergarten Forest School, which was lovely.

This photo there kind of took my breath away as it gives me a glimpse of the man Aaron is to become:
Most trees are too tall for Aaron to climb so I was very chuffed to see them both scamper up this one with ease, and confidence:
What an adventurous fearless pair they are.

They followed each other everywhere and got to see much more of the place by doing so:

They'd climb to get a better view of animals, and just because...
There are actually too many nice photos so I think I will need to make a slideshow. I finally did, it is at the bottom, please take a look.

The best part of the day was making a carved pumpkin, not because it rivalled all the climbing and many adventures, but because it was SUCH a great keepsake, we had it lit by the door when gifting all the trick or treaters who came knocking last night, and because it is the first time I have done it, so a real memorable occasion!
Aaron drew on the face and I cut it exactly how he'd drawn it. The meltdown of all meltdowns ensued because he wanted to use the knife, but the lady on duty was quite strict that kids couldn't. Rightly so as the knives were incredibly sharp; all the better for pumpkin carving with.

He loved the finished result:
He was very proud of his pumpkin indeed:
We spent the last couple of hours of the day in the adventure playground, and despite being in the shade, despite the sun going down, we still were not at all cold. Amazing weather for the last day of October. Thank you weather Gods.

The pumpkins were glad of the rest whilst the adventurous two played:
It was a long journey home, but thankfully there were still trick or treaters out and about.

When we arrived on our road there was not a soul in sight but I didn't even have chance to put a pizza in the oven before the door started knocking.

After the first few we put our costumes on, so we could greet our trick or treaters like this:
So so so very glad that I reviewed these costumes for Aldi a few weeks ago.

We set a table up inside the door with our pumpkin (which now had the addition of a candle) and a selection of sweets, so that we were all set up for our visitors. I think they probably started visiting before we got home, but we had more than enough visitors with the ones we did see.

I'm glad I popped my carving a pumpkin cherry. Love it so much will definitely now be an annual tradition:

Fancy Dress Outfitters - A Review - Halloween for Babies - baby Boys!

Hi

One of the reasons I am blogging less is that it is so so time consuming so I am going to see if I can write this review up in 30 minutes (as I am shattered and need an early night).

We were offered the chance to get a free Halloween Outfit in exchange for a product review.  For the lovely company Fancy Dress Outfitters.

I loved dressing Aaron up as Santa at Christmas so why not for Halloween.

We chose the Vampire Outfit as I could tell it would suit Aaron best.

This is how it looks on the packaging:

Aaron is 16 months and big for his age so we bought it in age 1 to 2 years and it fits PERFECTLY.

If you would like to order one too, you can find it by going to their website

The company was established in 2009 and is now one of the UK's leading fancy dress costume websites, with customers throughout the UK and EU.

They can be found at:

Blog: http://blog.fancydressoutfitters.co.uk/ (They put costume ideas, advice and some silly things on there)

Twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/@iwantfancydress

So back to the REVIEW.

Well Aaron didn't like having the head covering on - he doesn't like hats! so look at these snaps:

okay so far

oooops my head is covered!

I am waiting Mum! Take it OFF!

I mean it!

That's better - Phew!
So he looks gorgeous doesn't he?

I will add some more smiley photos when I get him to wear it again but I was conscious that I need to do the review while it is still early enough for YOU to order something for Halloween for YOUR baby :-)

This outfit retails at £17.77.

If you are going to a party it is well worth it.

Only one naughty thing on the packaging, they say the outfit contains SHOES when they are really shoe coverings.

I made my deadline of writing this post by 21:30 so that I can have an early night - wow I am well impressed when some reviews have taken me HOURS.
